Rome
Valentina Giannotti describes what organising a trip for Lilian Baylis Technology School students to Rome showed her:
"It made me realise how lucky most of us are. Imagine a kid who is excited because he has a 'real' bed to sleep on, not just a mattress on the floor? Or one who is surprised because he only has to share the bedroom with two more people? They worked very hard and did their homework every day. I had the opportunity to read the diaries they had written and the effort they'd put into writing them showed that it was a really big experience for them."
Amsterdam
Students visiting Amsterdam were specialising in History. Activities in Amsterdam included a visit to the Jewish Historical Museum and to Modurodam (Holland in miniature), with dinner at the beach in Sheveningen, a sampling of Dutch pancakes, a boat trip on the canals and bowling.
"The students enjoyed the beach .... A great day, with a great combination of activities, with a lot of fun and sun."
"Programmes like this should been encouraged, if only for the fact that you get 20 happy faces!"
"We all felt that the weekend was a great success. The programme was a mixture of cultural events and fun"
Brussels
The trip to Brussels included visits to the Scientastic museum and the modern art museum, the Chocolate Museum, mini-golf, a ride on a 19th-century tram, climbing the Lion of Waterloo, a drink in the Grande Place, bowling and a barbecue in the garden of C&W [EMEA] CEO, John Travers, with football, tennis, badminton and petanque - and a few drops of Belgian rain! John commented:
"It was a unique opportunity to meet great young people full of energy and dreams..."
"...it was great to talk to them - there was for example the student who arrived in London three years ago from Ghana, where he had grown up since the age of four, but had not seen his mother for seven years. This leaves an impression when it is explained by someone right in front of you and 20 years younger than you."
Lisbon
The trip to Lisbon had a positive impact on the London students...
"It's a fantastic initiative, giving the key to the outside world to young teenagers with limited opportunities in a 'cool' way," said Josephine Campos e Sousa, C&W Lisbon.
