The Special Educational Centre, Poland
The C&W Polish office has linked up with the school for handicapped children in Wegorzewo, 15 km from the border with Russia and one of the poorest regions of Poland. The school was opened by a German priest in 1907, when this part of Poland was under Prussian rule. During the Second World War, the buildings were occupied by the Russian army, with the school reopening in 1950. The school now has 160 students between the ages of seven and 25, with the older students training to become, for example, gardeners, tailors, cooks and decorators.
As part of an initial fund-raising event, our Polish office will hold an auction to raise money for the school as part of the office's 15th anniversary celebrations on 7 June. The auction will be held by John Townsend, Head of our London-based Auctions team. In addition, we will be organising work experience for the older students and the aim is also to organise visits to other countries for a small group of students.
"The school had previously organised a visit to Denmark, which had played a huge role in the children's development, helping to motivate them and opening them up to other cultures," says Richard Petersen, the Head of our Warsaw office, and who, together with Iwona Kamysz, our Polish Marketing Manager, is involved with our relationship with the school.
