To be frankly honest, I think I am in a lucky work environment to not have faced much discrimination against woman.
I’ve encountered several moments where I had clients personally discriminating myself by addressing phrases or nuances referencing “because you’re a woman” or “since you’re at that age” or even bringing up “marriage”.
Placed in a difficult situation, my boss and colleagues have carefully and sincerely stood up for me addressing that times have changed, and work environments are gradually shifting towards a more equally balanced environment for woman as well.
The stigma for woman to be married at a certain age or not qualified for certain positions unfortunately still remains in Japan, especially in the older generations.
The behaviors of those who address such discriminating words may not change, but the more people verbally address that woman are as equally fit as men, the more awareness it brings and more cautious of the words that become communicated.
