A Historic Riverside Street Finds a New Purpose
Song Wat Road has long been recognised for its Sino-Portuguese shophouses, narrow street frontage and network of pedestrian laneways. In recent years, this relatively untouched streetscape has attracted renewed attention from both domestic and international audiences, supported by influencers, artists, models and visitors seeking distinctive urban backdrops beyond Bangkok’s established retail districts.
From storage spaces to experiential retail
The area’s transition has been accelerated by local landlords repositioning small street-facing storage and trading spaces for food and beverage operators, cafés and retail brands. What began with specialty coffee outlets and converted warehouse-cum-café concepts has evolved into a more permanent mix of design-led stores, experiential flagships and destination venues that use place, architecture and atmosphere as part of the brand experience.
A fragrance cluster shaped by Thai and international brands
Premium fragrance, body care and scent design have emerged as the area’s most visible retail theme. According to the commentary, Song Wat Road now counts around 10 Thai fragrance and scent-design stores, supported by wider sector growth in Thailand’s fragrance market, which rose 10% in 2025 to THB 14.9 billion. Domestic brands such as Antidotes, Frayn, Copenn, Amoln and Reunrom have helped establish the cluster, while Thann, Le Labo, Journal and Panpuri further strengthen the area’s positioning as a destination for scent-led retail.
