CHICAGO – In cities around the world, shifts in lifestyles and habits are challenging the traditional housing preferences in which urbanites reside. As a result, entrepreneurs, designers, city planners, universities and developers are collaborating to create hybrid living typologies to adapt to more nomadic generations.
Top U.S. and European co-living and student accommodation market leaders will gather in New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 17, for the first-ever Class of 2020 global summit, “The Future is Blended,” to exchange best practices to help shape shared urban living models of the future. Susan Tjarksen, managing director at Chicago-based Cushman & Wakefield, will co-moderate a Q&A of high-profile industry experts who will explore key trends in co-living, co-working and student accommodation. The program takes place at WeWork in New York’s SoHo neighborhood.
“While co-living is not a new concept, its popularity has grown so much in recent years that it is now a fully-fledged niche asset class,” said Tjarksen. “Over the next five years, significant capital is expected to be deployed toward delivery of thousands of more beds across the world. By bringing so many stakeholders and thought-leaders together in one place, we have the opportunity to share ideas and strategize on the best ways to shape blended living over the next decade and beyond.”
Tjarksen founded the brokerage firm KIG CRE in 2015, which was acquired by Cushman & Wakefield in 2018. She has more than 30 years of real estate experience working with both private and public investment institutions throughout the country. She is a leader in apartment and mixed-use development, having planned, built, designed, financed and delivered projects totaling more than $3.5 billion. She is also co-author of Cushman & Wakefield’s May 2019 white paper report on co-living.
