UK Self Storage Annual Report 2020

The Self Storage Association UK Annual Industry Report provides a comprehensive overview into the self storage sector.

The Self Storage Association UK Annual Industry Report examines how the industry performed in 2019 as well as in previous years, and considers the growth prospects for the sector in 2020.

The annual report covers all viewpoints of the industry; collecting data from operators representing a third of stores - just under half the storage space in the UK. The report also includes survey results and analysis from customers and the general public.

The findings reveal that annual turnover for the industry increased to £766 million in 2019, and although occupancy levels for the industry dipped marginally for the first time in 8 years by 1% to 76.2% in 2019, this was largely due to significant growth in supply as many new stores are not at full occupancy yet.


The UK accounts for approximately 41% of the European self storage market and has the most storage per person of any country in Europe. We estimate there are now approximately 1,900 self storage sites in the UK, offering around 49 million sq ft of space with an average store size of 25,700 sq ft.
