The Beauty of Balance

Terri-lynn Mitchell • 3/11/2019
As Cushman & Wakefield’s Asset Services Minneapolis City Lead, my role has given me great growth and leadership opportunities. In our service line, more than half of our city leads are women, and these dynamic women lead their markets with poise and presence.

International Women's Day Promotional Banner

To continue increasing women’s presence in commercial real estate (CRE), this year’s International Women’s Day theme Balance for Better calls both women and men to lead the charge for a balanced workplace and advocate on behalf of each other.

Diversity and Inclusion at Cushman & Wakefield

Cushman & Wakefield is a leader in diversity and inclusion (D&I) by advocating for and championing women in leadership, exemplified with the commitment from the executive level on down and the launch the Women’s Integrated Network (WIN) in 2016.

While I believe that we are on our way to a gender-balanced workplace, women remain a minority in this industry. But, despite the gender disparity in CRE, I am encouraged by my male counterparts within Cushman & Wakefield who see the value women bring to our business and who want the most capable leaders leading our teams. As the sole woman among the top three to four CRE providers in Minneapolis, I am surrounded by men in similar leadership roles; sometimes I lose sight of the fact that I am a successful woman accomplishing the same things as them. With my position and influence comes the responsibility to be a force for action and driver of gender equality.

A Force for Action

As women, we must lead the way in building a diverse workplace. We possess the ability to connect with clients and build lasting relationships. We provide emotional intelligence, attention to detail, commitment to service and social awareness. Women bring immense value – and our clients see that value in the different perspectives that our diverse teams bring to their businesses.

Communicating openly about these topics in the workplace keeps the conversation at the forefront. Voice your opinions, ask challenging questions of those in higher positions and confront unprofessional behavior or situations head on.

Throughout my career, I have mentored several young women on my team and I continue to share with them this piece of advice: if you can understand how to run a business and learn the financials of your property or service line, you can do anything. You will be prepared for what’s next.

International Women’s Day is my day. It’s your day. It’s our day. And it doesn’t end on March 8; it’s an endless force for action to truly make a positive impact for women everywhere, every day. And that’s a beautiful thing.
