Cushman & Wakefield’s ASPIRE Rejoins Kimochi, Inc. To Help Serve 300 Meals To San Francisco’s Elderly Community

Joshua Deale • 7/15/2022
Cushman & Wakefield teamed up with Kimochi, Inc. (or Kimochi Kai), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit senior service agency based in San Francisco’s historic Japantown neighborhood, to help serve the needs of San Francisco’s elderly community.

Helping to serve 300 meals on July 15 to Kimochi participants, the Cushman & Wakefield volunteers included several members of the firm’s Asians + Pacific Islanders in Real Estate (ASPIRE) Employee Resource Group (ERG). The effort was led by ASPIRE’s West Region Chair of Community Outreach, Susan Keokham, together with team members Katherine Daley, Soany Gunawan, Christian Monar, Denise Yee, and Ricky Zhang.

The Kimochi, Inc. staff included Shawne O’Connell, director of programs, Kai Fukumitsu, nutrition program coordinator, and Akiko Donohoe, administrative assistant.

The ASPIRE team took part in the nutrition program, helping for a few hours to bag meals for immediate pick up while also taking an opportunity to talk with some of the seniors. The delicious menu featured salmon misoyaki, cauliflower, spinach w/beet & carrot salad, orange, and milk to drink.

This was the second year in a row that ASPIRE supported this special and beneficial Kimochi community effort in San Francisco, with plans to continue volunteering in the future.

All Cushman & Wakefield volunteers had to provide either a copy of their COVID-19 vaccine card or to take a rapid home COVID-19 test the day of the event and provide proof of a negative test result that day.

The Kimochi Mission:

Kimochi’s mission is to provide a continuum of culturally-sensitive programs and services to all seniors and their families to preserve their dignity and independence, with a focus on the Japanese American and Japanese speaking community.

Seniors, anyone 60 and over and a San Francisco resident, are eligible to pick up a free Japanese style hot lunch, Monday – Friday. The program is funded through the city and donations by vendors. Kimochi does accept donations and offers a home delivery program. Due to COVID-19, meals remain served through pick-up only. Since 1971, Kimochi has provided culturally sensitive, Japanese language-based programs and services to 3,000 Bay Area seniors and their families each year. Services include transportation; referral and outreach services; health and consumer education seminars; healthy aging and senior center activities; social services; congregate and home delivered meals; in-home support services; adult social day care; 24-hour residential and respite care. Cushman & Wakefield’s ASPIRE aims to celebrate the Asian and Pacific Islander culture by building a global community that is committed to the advancement and development of its members while serving as champions of diversity and inclusion.
