Q: What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Hispanic Heritage Month is about educating our colleagues about the value that Latinos and Hispanics bring to our firm, and highlighting the successes of those within the community. I see this four-week period as an opportunity for us to celebrate the importance of our demographic with the rest of the company and society.

Q: What is a way you enjoy celebrating your culture at any time of the year?

Alejandro AlvarezAs a people, I think Latinos are very family-oriented. A majority of my relatives are still in Colombia, so I try to make the trip at least once a year. There’s nothing else that helps me feel more connected to my roots than to spend some quality time with my family.

Q: What aspects of your culture have served as a unique asset to you in your professional success?

I think just having a different perspective is very valuable. It brings an additional dynamic to every conversation.

Q: How do you think HOLA, the new Employee Resource Group (ERG) for Hispanic and Latino colleagues, will be beneficial to our company?

I have to admit that I’m a bit biased since I’m a member of the HOLA Leadership Council. That said, I strongly believe that this ERG will be immensely valuable to our employees. CRE has a reputation of not being diverse and very hard to break into, and I think both are accurate. Having an ERG that helps recognize and advance the careers of Latinos will not only help us retain talent but also show the business community and investors that Cushman & Wakefield is trying to make a positive change. It’s important for a company like Cushman & Wakefield to demonstrate to their employees and the industry that it cares about them and their culture.

Q: How have you seen diversity as a valuable asset in our business?

I think the companies we pitch every day are becoming more diverse. It’s valuable for us to sit across the table and show that as a firm we are also representative of our community.

Q: What are ways that all employees can be champions for diversity in the workplace?

Being a champion for diversity doesn’t mean you have to be a member of a specific minority group. It’s more about being knowledgeable and understanding a wide range of perspectives and business practices.

Q: What are ways in which you give or pay it forward in the Latino community?

I have taken leadership positions with ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America) and LatinoJustice. Both organizations have a long history of being incredible assets to Latinos. That involvement is what led me to work alongside the rest of the HOLA National Leadership Council to launch and establish our newest ERG.
